Common Maidenhair Fern
Adiantum aethiopicum
The Common Maidenhair Fern is a delicate, elegant Australian native fern with lacy, bright green fronds offset by contrasting thin, black wire-like stems. Naturally growing along creek banks and shaded forest floors across Australia, it requires high humidity and consistent moisture, making it a favorite for terrariums, humid bathrooms, or shaded garden spaces.
Native Origin & Climate
Damp forest floors, rocky gullies, and creek beds throughout eastern and southern Australia.
Expert Pruning Tip
If the fern dries out and the leaves turn brown and crispy, cut the entire plant back to the soil level. Keep the soil moist, and it will often push up a flush of fresh green fronds.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy
Green Thumb Required. Demanding. Requires constant moisture and high humidity. Will drop leaves or crisp up quickly if allowed to dry out even once.
Moderate-to-low light. Prefers indirect, dappled shade. Never expose to direct sun, which will instantly bleach and shrivel the delicate, paper-thin leaflets.
High. Keep the potting mix damp at all times. Water immediately as the top layer begins to feel slightly dry. Never let the pot stand in deep water, but avoid drying out.
Peat-rich, water-retentive but well-draining soil. A mix of 60% peat moss, 20% organic compost, and 20% perlite keeps moisture locked in without compacting.
Prefers high humidity (60%+). Thrives naturally outdoors in temperate and subtropical eastern Australia. Indoors, it requires high humidity—perfect for bathrooms or grouped with other plants.
Division of the rhizomatous root ball during spring repotting.
Delicate, airy, and feathery. Light, lace-like fronds offset by dark stems, creating a soft, misty forest texture.
Naturally lit bathrooms, terrariums, or shaded patios and fern houses. Keep far away from heaters, fans, or air conditioners.
