Kangaroo Paw

Anigozanthos flavidus

Anigozanthos Flavidus (Tall Kangaroo Paw) is a iconic Australian native plant famous for its clusters of velvety, tubular flowers shaped like a kangaroo paw. Native to Western Australia, it forms large clumps of strappy, sword-like green foliage, topped by tall branching stems of red, green, or yellow fuzzy flowers that attract native birds.

Native Origin & Climate

Damp sands and creek banks of South-West Western Australia. Thrives across southern and eastern Australia in sunny landscapes.

Expert Pruning Tip

Prune the entire flower stem right back to the ground level once the blooms fade. Cut old, damaged leaves down to the base in autumn to clean the clump.

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Extremely hardy once established in gardens. Resilient against wind, drought, and light coastal breezes.

Sunlight Diet

Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sun daily to produce strong, vibrant flowers. If grown in shade, it will not bloom well and can rot.

Thirst Level

Low. Water regularly during spring and summer while buds are forming. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant; water sparingly.

Rooting Terrain

Sandy, acidic, and extremely free-draining soil. In pots, use a premium native-specific potting mix (which has low phosphorus levels).

Atmosphere

Adapts well to temperate, Mediterranean, and subtropical climates. Can tolerate light frost. Avoid high-humidity indoor rooms.

Multiplication

Division of rhizomes in spring. Gently lift and divide clumps using a sharp spade, ensuring each division has roots and leaves.

Form & Vibe

Strappy, grass-like, and wild. Sword-like clumps of leaves with tall, fuzzy, colorful flower spikes that reach up to 1.5 meters.
