Norfolk Island Pine
Araucaria heterophylla
Araucaria Heterophylla (Norfolk Island Pine) is a magnificent, symmetrical coniferous tree native to Norfolk Island, an Australian territory in the Pacific. Famous for its tiered, horizontal branches and soft, bright green needles, it is highly wind and salt-tolerant, making it an iconic sight along Australian coastlines. It is also grown indoors as a unique living Christmas tree.
Native Origin & Climate
Coastal cliffs and slopes of Norfolk Island. Highly suited to salty sea breezes and sandy soils along coastal NSW, QLD, and VIC.
Expert Pruning Tip
Pruning is generally not required and will destroy its symmetrical tiered growth. Do not cut off the central vertical trunk (leader).

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy
Beginner Friendly. Resilient and slow-growing when kept in containers indoors. Outdoors, it grows into a massive, grand tree.
Bright, direct sunlight. Outdoors, it thrives in full sun. Indoors, place in a sun-drenched spot near a large North or West-facing window.
Low-to-moderate. Water thoroughly when the top 5cm of potting mix is dry. Drought-tolerant once established. Water sparingly in winter.
Sandy, acidic, and very free-draining. Blend a premium potting mix with 20% peat moss and 15% coarse sand to replicate its native soils.
Extremely tolerant of strong winds and salty air. Tolerates cold winter temperatures and light frost. Protect from dry ducted heaters.
Sowing seeds. It is slow to grow from seeds, so purchasing young potted plants is the standard way to grow.
Tiered, symmetrical, and architectural. Layered horizontal branches covered in soft, scale-like needles. Adds high scale and coastal structure.
Outdoors in coastal garden beds, large sunny lawns, or in large pots on sunny decks. Indoors, as a living focal tree in bright rooms.
Versatile Sheltered
Caution:Ingestion of needles can cause mild stomach irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea in dogs and cats. Not highly toxic, but keep away from pets.
