Coast Banksia

Banksia integrifolia

Banksia integrifolia, commonly known as the Coast Banksia, is an iconic and highly resilient Australian native tree. It features stiff, narrow, dark-green leaves with striking silvery-white undersides and produces cylindrical, pale-yellow flower spikes from autumn to spring. Naturally growing along the coastal dunes and forests of eastern Australia, it is highly tolerant of salty winds, sandy soil, and drought, making it key for coastal gardens and wildlife attraction.

Native Origin & Climate

Coastal dunes, headlands, and dry sclerophyll forests along the eastern coast of Australia from Victoria to Queensland.

Expert Pruning Tip

Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Avoid pruning into old wood that lacks leaves, as it may not sprout new growth easily.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Easy Care. Highly resilient, drought-tolerant, and low-maintenance once established.

Sunlight Diet

Full sun. Requires a very sunny position to grow strong, healthy, and produce abundant yellow flower spikes.

Thirst Level

Low. Water regularly while establishing, but once mature it is highly drought-tolerant, surviving on natural rainfall.

Rooting Terrain

Very well-draining, sandy, acidic to neutral soil. Use a low-phosphorus native potting mix or garden soil, as Banksias are sensitive to phosphorus.

Atmosphere

Tolerates coastal sea spray, wind, drought, and light frost. Extremely well-adapted to typical coastal Australian climates.

Multiplication

Grown from seed released from woody seed cones, or semi-hardwood cuttings under controlled conditions.

Form & Vibe

Rugged, coastal, and sculptural. Silvery-green foliage and pale yellow bottle-brush flowers offer a distinct wild Australian look.
