Rattlesnake Plant
Calathea insignis
Calathea insignis (syn. Goeppertia insignis), commonly known as the Rattlesnake Plant, is a stunning evergreen perennial native to the Brazilian rainforest. It is highly prized for its long, narrow, erect leaves featuring a wavy border and light green upper surfaces painted with alternating large and small dark green brushstroke blotches. The undersides of the leaves are a deep, dramatic reddish-purple, and they fold up at night in response to light changes (nyctinasty).
Native Origin & Climate
Warm, moist tropical rainforest understories of Brazil.
Expert Pruning Tip
Trim old or damaged leaves at the base of the stem using clean, sharp scissors. Avoid pulling the leaves off by hand, which can tear the rhizome.

Green Thumb Required. Demanding. Sensitive to water quality, low humidity, and temperature drops.
Bright indirect light to medium shadow. Avoid direct sun, which will fade the striking leaf patterns and scorch the leaf margins.
High. Keep potting soil consistently moist but never soggy. Sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water; use filtered, distilled, or rainwater.
Rich, water-retentive but well-aerated soil. Combine 60% peat moss or coco coir, 20% perlite, and 20% orchid bark for a perfect blend.
Warm temperatures (18-28°C) and high humidity (60%+). Thrives in humid bathrooms or grouped with other plants. Protect from air drafts.
Propagation is done by carefully dividing the root ball rhizomes during spring repotting.
