Never Never Plant

Ctenanthe oppenheimiana

Ctenanthe Oppenheimiana, commonly known as the Never Never Plant, is a striking evergreen foliage plant native to Brazil. It is famous for its large, narrow leaves patterned with bands of silver-grey and dark green, contrasted by deep purple-burgundy undersides. Like its close relative the prayer plant, it folds its leaves upwards at night.

Native Origin & Climate

Humid forest floors of Brazil. Highly popular in indoor spaces and sheltered sub-tropical gardens across eastern Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Prune away older, tattered leaves close to the base. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to clear dust and maintain variegation.

Botanical Blueprint

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Intermediate. Requires consistent warmth, humidity, and damp soil. Hardier than many delicate calathea varieties.

Sunlight Diet

Bright, indirect light. Direct sun will burn the foliage and cause colors to fade. Can tolerate light shade, but leaves will be less vibrant.

Thirst Level

Moderate to High. Keep the soil mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1-2 cm of soil has dried.

Rooting Terrain

Rich, moisture-retaining, well-draining soil. Combine 60% premium potting soil with 20% peat moss and 20% perlite.

Atmosphere

Appreciates high humidity. Keep misted indoors during dry summer periods, and protect from dry winter heating drafts.

Multiplication

Division. Carefully divide root clumps during spring repotting, ensuring each division has several leaves and roots.

Form & Vibe

Upright, bushy, and clumping. Striking striped leaves on long stems, showing burgundy undersides when folded.

Perfect Placement

Warm, humid bathrooms, protected outdoor verandas, or shaded garden borders in sub-tropical zones.
