Australian Tree Fern

Cyathea cooperi

Cyathea Cooperi, also known as the Coin Spot Tree Fern, is a fast-growing tree fern native to the coastal rainforests of eastern Australia. It features a slender trunk and a broad crown of large, lacy, bright-green fronds. It is highly valued for adding a tropical, prehistoric feel to shaded gardens.

Native Origin & Climate

Moist rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland. Perfect for shaded, humid outdoor gardens in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Expert Pruning Tip

Cut off brown, dead fronds close to the trunk to maintain a tidy appearance. Water the trunk itself, as the aerial roots benefit from direct moisture.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Intermediate. Requires consistent outdoor moisture and shelter from strong winds.

Sunlight Diet

Part shade to full shade. Protect from hot, direct midday sun, which can dry out and burn the delicate fronds.

Thirst Level

High. Requires soil that remains consistently damp. Water the crown and trunk regularly to keep the trunk moist, especially in hot weather.

Rooting Terrain

Rich, organic, moisture-retaining soil. Enrich the planting area with plenty of compost, leaf mold, and organic matter.

Atmosphere

Thrives in high humidity and warm, sheltered positions. Resilient down to light frosts once established, but protect young plants.

Multiplication

Spores. Tree ferns do not grow from cuttings. Propagation from spores is slow and best left to professionals.

Form & Vibe

Tall, architectural, and graceful. A crown of delicate, feathery green fronds arching outward from a single trunk.

Perfect Placement

Shaded courtyards, under taller canopy trees, or next to a water feature in a native garden.

Habitat Zone

Outdoor

Toxicity Watch
