Dumb Cane

Dieffenbachia seguine

Dieffenbachia seguine, commonly known as Dumb Cane, is a striking tropical aroid featuring large, lush green leaves variegated with creamy white or yellow patterns. Originating from tropical America, it has long been a popular indoor plant globally, prized for its dramatic foliage and adaptability to low-light indoor spaces. Care must be taken due to its toxic sap, which contains calcium oxalate crystals.

Native Origin & Climate

Tropical rainforest understories of Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Expert Pruning Tip

Prune leggy stems near the base using gloves to stimulate bushy new growth. Ensure you wash tools after pruning to prevent sap contact.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Easy to care for, but requires safety precautions when handling due to toxic sap.

Sunlight Diet

Moderate, filtered light. Thrives in bright indirect sunlight near east or west-facing windows. Avoid direct Australian afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves.

Thirst Level

Moderate. Water when the top 2-3cm of potting mix feels dry. Reduce watering during cooler winter months. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

Rooting Terrain

A chunky, well-draining aroid mix. Combine 50% premium potting mix, 20% orchid bark, 20% perlite, and 10% peat moss for optimal aeration and drainage.

Atmosphere

Warm temperatures (18-28°C) and moderate-to-high humidity. Appreciates misting or humidifiers in dry, air-conditioned rooms.

Multiplication

Stem cuttings or dividing offshoots during spring repotting.

Form & Vibe

Upright and bushy. Large, broad, patterned leaves create a bold tropical statement and architectural volume.

Perfect Placement

Perfect for offices, living rooms, or humid bathrooms. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
