Silky Oak

Grevillea robusta

Grevillea Robusta (Silky Oak) is a grand, fast-growing evergreen tree native to the subtropical and tropical rainforest coastlines of eastern Australia. It is the largest species in the Grevillea genus, producing fern-like, dark-green foliage with silky bronze undersides, topped by spectacular, golden-orange toothbrush-like flower clusters in spring that attract native birds.

Native Origin & Climate

Coastal rainforests and riverbanks of eastern New South Wales and Queensland. Fully adapted to coastal and temperate Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Pruning is generally not required for mature garden trees. For container specimens, pinch growing tips in spring to control height.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Extremely hardy once established in gardens. Resilient against wind, drought, and light coastal breezes.

Sunlight Diet

Full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sun daily to produce strong, vibrant flowers. If grown in shade, it will not bloom well.

Thirst Level

Low. Water regularly while establishing. Once mature, it is highly drought-tolerant and survives easily on rainfall alone.

Rooting Terrain

Deep, rich, and well-draining soil. In containers, use a native-specific potting mix (low phosphorus is essential).

Atmosphere

Adapts well to temperate, Mediterranean, and subtropical climates. Can tolerate light frost. Avoid high-humidity indoor rooms.

Multiplication

Sowing seeds or cuttings in spring. Seedlings grow quickly. Cuttings require rooting hormone and bottom warmth.

Form & Vibe

Grand, upright, and wild. Rosettes of leaves topped by massive golden-orange flower spikes. High architectural scale.

Outdoors in large gardens, native landscape beds, or as a massive centerpiece feature in coastal backyards.
