Cabbage Tree Palm

Livistona australis

The Cabbage Tree Palm is a tall, slender palm native to the eastern coast of Australia. Known for its fibrous grey trunk, round canopy of large fan-shaped green leaves, and drooping leaf segments, it can grow up to 25 meters tall in the wild. Its name comes from the early European settlers who ate the tender young leaf buds ("cabbages"). It is exceptionally hardy, drought-tolerant once established, and cold-resistant.

Native Origin & Climate

Moist rainforests, swamp forests, and coastal gullies of eastern Australia, from Queensland to Victoria.

Expert Pruning Tip

Prune old, dead brown leaves near the trunk to maintain a tidy appearance, but leave the green leaves untouched as they support the tree's health.

Easy Care. Highly resilient, low-maintenance, and adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions.

Sunlight Diet

Full sun to part shade. Thrives in bright, direct sunlight once mature, but young palms prefer a bit of shelter or filtered light.

Thirst Level

Moderate. Needs regular watering during establishment. Once mature, it is remarkably drought-tolerant, though it grows faster with consistent moisture.

Rooting Terrain

Adaptable. Prefers deep, moist, organic-rich, well-draining soil, but handles sandy, clay, or swampy soils well.

Atmosphere

Highly adaptable. Tolerates strong winds, coastal sea spray, coastal humidity, and cold temperatures down to -3°C, handling light frost.

Multiplication

Propagation is done by seed, which germinates slowly but steadily in warm, moist conditions.

Form & Vibe

Majestic, structural, and classic. Large, round fan-like fronds and a tall straight trunk create a bold coastal native architectural statement.
