Kangaroo Paw Fern

Microsorum pustulatum

The Kangaroo Paw Fern is an iconic Australian and New Zealand native fern featuring glossy, leathery green fronds of variable shape—often deeply and irregularly lobed, resembling a kangaroo's foot. It spreads via a thick, creeping, furry rhizome that anchors to trees, rocks, or soil. Exceptionally hardy compared to other ferns, it is a popular choice for hanging baskets, groundcover, or tree mounting in shaded gardens.

Native Origin & Climate

Moist rainforests, rocky gullies, and tree trunks of eastern Australia (NSW, QLD, VIC, TAS) and New Zealand.

Expert Pruning Tip

Trim old or damaged fronds close to the creeping rhizome to maintain a fresh look. Be careful not to nick the green creeping rhizomes.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Easy Care. Much hardier than other ferns, tolerates lower humidity and minor drying out due to its leathery fronds.

Sunlight Diet

Bright indirect light to medium shade. Direct sunlight can scorch or bleach the fronds, but it tolerates more ambient light than delicate ferns.

Thirst Level

Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist but not saturated. Allow the top 2cm of soil to dry out slightly before watering again.

Rooting Terrain

Rich, highly organic, aerated, well-draining soil. A mix of potting soil, orchid bark, peat moss, and perlite replicates its natural epiphytic habitat.

Atmosphere

Prefers cool to warm, humid environments. Handles outdoor conditions along coastal southeastern Australia exceptionally well. Cold-hardy.

Multiplication

Very easy to propagate by dividing the furry creeping rhizome, ensuring each section has at least one healthy frond and roots.

Form & Vibe

Glossy, wild, and sculptural. Lobed leathery fronds combined with furry creeping rhizomes create an organic, textural, woodland vibe.

Perfect Placement

Hanging baskets in sheltered courtyards, bathrooms with bright indirect light, or planted as a groundcover beneath tall garden trees.
