Money Tree

Pachira aquatica

Pachira Aquatica, commonly known as the Money Tree, is a tropical wetland tree native to Central and South America. Highly popular as an indoor plant, it is often grown with its slender trunks braided together, topped by a lush canopy of palm-like hand-shaped leaves. It is a symbol of good luck and positive energy.

Native Origin & Climate

Swampy wetland areas of Central and South America. Adapts very well to bright indoor positions across Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Prune the top growth in spring to control the tree's size and maintain a full, bushy shape. Avoid cutting the main braided trunks.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Very resilient, stores water in its swollen trunks, and is highly tolerant of occasional dry spells.

Sunlight Diet

Bright, indirect light. Can tolerate medium light levels, but growth will slow down. Protect from direct midday sun which burns leaves.

Thirst Level

Low to Moderate. Water thoroughly when the top 50% of the soil has dried out. Drought-tolerant; avoid overwatering which causes root rot.

Rooting Terrain

Fast-draining potting soil. A high-quality indoor potting mix with 20% sand or perlite works perfectly to prevent waterlogging.

Atmosphere

Enjoys warm temperatures (16°C–28°C) and moderate humidity. Keep away from cold winter drafts and direct heater vents.

Multiplication

Stem cuttings. Propagate in summer by taking stem cuttings, dipping in rooting hormone, and placing in moist soil under humidity.

Form & Vibe

Tree-like, architectural, and lush. Braided brown trunks supporting a crown of large, hand-shaped bright green leaves.

Perfect Placement

Bright corners of living rooms, office lobbies, reception desks, or dining spaces.
