Burro's Tail

Sedum morganianum

Sedum Morganianum, commonly known as Burro's Tail or Donkey's Tail, is a popular trailing succulent native to southern Mexico. It is famous for its long, cascading stems covered in thick, overlapping, bean-like blue-green leaves. It makes a spectacular hanging display on balconies or bright windows.

Native Origin & Climate

Dry cliff faces in warm regions of Mexico. Adapts perfectly to hot, dry conditions across Australia.

Expert Pruning Tip

Handle with extreme care! The small, plump leaves fall off at the slightest touch. Any fallen leaves can be laid on dry soil to propagate.

Localized Australian Care Taxonomy

Care Profile

Beginner Friendly. Very low-maintenance and extremely drought-tolerant. Needs a spot where it won't be bumped.

Sunlight Diet

Bright, indirect light to full morning sun. Protect from harsh summer afternoon sun outdoors, which can sunburn the leaves.

Thirst Level

Very Low. Stores water in its fleshy leaves. Allow the soil mix to dry out 100% between waterings. Water monthly or less in winter.

Rooting Terrain

Gritty, fast-draining potting soil. Use a specialty cactus and succulent mix, or combine potting soil with 40% coarse sand or pumice.

Atmosphere

Tolerates dry air well. Resilient to indoor heating. Keep warm and protect from freezing winter temperatures and heavy frost.

Multiplication

Leaf or stem cuttings. Simply lay fallen leaves on top of dry succulent soil, or plant stem cuttings to grow new plants.

Form & Vibe

Cascading, heavy, and textural. Long, rope-like stems covered in small, fleshy, blue-green overlapping teardrop leaves.

Perfect Placement

Hanging baskets near bright windows, high shelves, or sunny sheltered balconies out of the wind.
